UK Nationality can be obtained through several pathways including through ILR, marriage, registration at birth and the Right of Abode in the UK.

British Nationality brings a number of benefits such as being entitled to a UK passport, having the right to stand and vote in local and national UK elections, obtaining rights to travel, reside and work within other EEA member states and no longer being subject to any type of UK immigration control.

UK Citizenship Requirements:

Applicants who are married to a British Citizen must:
  • Have been in the UK for 3 years and have ILR on the date of application.
  • Have been living in the UK at the start of those 3 years.
  • Not have been absent from the UK for more than 270 days in those 3 years.
  • Not have been absent from the UK for more than 90 days in 12 months before application.
  • Be of good character.
  • Pass the Life in the UK test.
  • Have sufficient knowledge of English, Welsh or Gaelic.
  • Have an intention to live in the UK.

Applicants who are not married to a British Citizen must:

  • Have been in the UK for 5 years. The last year of that having been as a permanent resident with ILR.
  • Not have been absent for more than 450 days in that period.
  • Not have been absent for more than 90 days in the 12 months before application.
  • Be of good character.
  • Pass the Life in the UK test.
  • Have sufficient knowledge of English, Welsh or Gaelic.
  • Have an intention to live in the UK.

Registration of a child

Children born before 31 December 1982 in the UK may be automatically British.

Children born in the UK after 1 January 1983 may be registered as a British citizen if either parent is a British citizen or settled in the United Kingdom when the child is born. Some children born outside the UK may be entitled to British citizenship dependent on certain factors.

Some children under the age of 18 years living in the UK can be registered as British citizens in certain circumstances.
